The School of Science and Engineering is looking for a PhD student to work on the project “Lagrangian Dispersion in Mixed Convective Turbulence “.

The research

Turbulent thermal convection is a ubiquitous process in nature. It is responsible for heat exchanges over cities, oceans and at the base of the circulation of the atmosphere. It is a basic element in planetary formation models. Although investigated for a long time a number of phenomena are not yet understood. In particular Lagrangian description of the transport properties of convective turbulence has been only scarcely explored in well controlled laboratory conditions."

  • The main focus of the research project is will be to perform Lagrangian experiments of tracers and inertial particles in turbulent flows with thermal dynamics.
  • Work on the development of measurement systems capable of conducting Lagrangian Particle Tracking of particle dynamics combined with measurements of particle temperature.
  • Develop experimental facilities and process and analyze experimental data for scientific publication

This PhD project is part of a collaboration between the Department of Engineering at Reykjavik University (Iceland) and the Laboratory of Physics at Ecole Normale Supérieure of Lyon (France). While the main part of the project will be carried in Reykjavik, the candidate will also have the opportunity to participate to experimental campaigns in Lyon.

Your profile

We are looking for enthusiastic and motivated students with good communication skills to join our research team in turbulence. The PhD candidate should have

  • Master’s degree (or comparable) in Physics or relevant field of Engineering, with some foundation in Fluid Mechanics.
  • Experience in conducting experiments, knowledge of image processing and statistical analysis of experimental or numerical data.

Your application

To apply, please follow this link.

Submit a cover letter, your CV, as well as contact information of two references. Your cover letter should briefly describe your research interests and why you are interested in joining this project. Applications received before April 15 of 2020 will be given full consideration.
