The ForWind – Center for Wind Energy Research, Institute of Physics at the University of Oldenburg, jointly with Siemens Gamesa, invites applications for a PhD position (m/f/d) in the “Model Development for the Atmospheric Boundary Layer” as a part of the AptWind Marie Skłodowska-Curie Doctoral Network. The PhD candidate will be employed 50 % of the time (envisaged period: April 2023-September 2024) at the University of Oldenburg in Germany and 50 % (envisaged period: October 2024-March 2026) at Siemens Gamesa in Den Haag/The Hague, The Netherlands.

The doctoral candidate will be part of The Atmospheric Physics and Turbulence for Wind Energy (AptWind) Doctoral Network ( that provides training for a new creative, entrepreneurial, innovative and resilient industry-oriented academic generation apt to face current and future challenges at the frontier of research within atmospheric flow physics and turbulence for wind energy applications, where the trained Doctoral Candidates (DCs) will be able to convert knowledge and ideas into new products, and services for economic and social benefit.  The main objective of the PhD project is to further develop numerical and stochastic wind field models that consider the empirically observed presence of large-scale coherent structures and the accurate statistical significance of extreme wind gusts in the atmospheric boundary later. A secondary goal is analyzing the relationship between the generated inflow wind fields and the wind turbine rotor loads and dynamics for various atmospheric conditions.
