Description

The proposed project aims at investigating the characteristics and evolution of the helical vortex wake generated by a three-bladed rotor operating in the wind turbine regime, and its effect on a second rotor placed downstream, in terms of efficiency and fatigue. Focus will be placed on various modifications of the blade geometry (span, pitch, tip devices), introduced as a means to enhance instabilities of the tip vortex system, which are beneficial for wake recovery and a reduction of fluid loads on the second rotor. The study involves small- and medium-scale experiments in two water channel facilities, including flow visualization and velocity and force measurements, as well as numerical simulations using a vortex method. The results will help identify promising configurations for increasing the performance and lifetime of full-scale wind farms.

Framework

This work is part of a technology maturation project funded and supervised by SATT Sud-Est in France, involving a collaboration between the Institut de Recherche sur les Phénomènes Hors Equilibre (IRPHE) in Marseille, and the Department of Wind Energy of the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) in Copenhagen. The postdoc position is based in Marseille, with several planned visits to Copenhagen, under the guidance of Thomas Leweke (IRPHE) and Jens N. Sørensen (DTU) and interactions with Guillaume Gouvernet from SATT Sud-Est.

Qualifications

PhD in physics, engineering or related fields. Solid background in aerodynamics, vortex dynamics and possibly fluid-structure interactions. Experience in experimental fluid dynamics (set-up design, measurements, post-processing, data analysis). Knowledge of numerical simulation is a plus. Good oral and written communication skills in English (delivering presentations, writing scientific articles).

Appointment : 
18 months full-time

Start date :
01 April 2021 (or as soon as possible after that)

Salary :
2200–2600 €/month (gross), depending on qualification and experience
