Job description:

The objective is to study the influence of turbulence on zooplankton behaviour through two approaches:

(1) Laboratory experiment. The objective is to use and develop an existing system producing turbulence in a small volume. It will be used to film the copepods (crustacean zooplankters) using 2 available high speed cameras (Phantom Miro), in order to record the trajectories. Analysis of the trajectory statistics (including velocity, acceleration) will be done in relation with the turbulence properties.

(2) In situ observations of turbulence-plankton interactions. The in situ observations will be recorded using a high resolution echo sounder (Signature 1000 from Nortek) which records current profile together with zooplankton particles. The deployment will be done in the English Channel close to the laboratory location, in the shore zone and in deeper waters. Analysis of the data in different conditions will help to understand the complex interactions between turbulence and zooplankton dynamics.

Knowledge in turbulence and data analysis, and experimental skills are required.
