Geophysical Fluid Dynamics session @ AGU 2026 - December 7-11, 2026 - San Francisco (U.S.)

On behalf of my fellow conveners, I would like to invite you to submit contributions to the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics (GFD) session at the AGU Annual Meeting 2026, which will be held in San Francisco (USA) from 7 to 11 December 2026. Please note that there is a strong possibility that this will be the last AGU Annual Meeting held in San Francisco for a decade, making this a particularly good opportunity to attend in person. This is a reference session for many scientists affiliated with the GDRs Mécanique des Fluides Géophysiques & Astrophysiques and Navier Stokes 2.00 and, as in previous years, we expect numerous abstract submissions from these communities. Please note that AGU and the Nonlinear Geophysics (NG) section, which hosts the GFD session, support the participation of students and early career scientists in the Annual Meeting through the AGU Honors Program, poster awards, and travel grants.

Session Description:
The purpose of this session is to gather scientists interested in all aspects of the fluid mechanics of the Earth and planets (including interiors, oceans, atmospheres, outer space environments) to foster exchanges between fundamental fluid/plasma and geophysics communities. Thanks to the evolution of high performance computing, the progress in laboratory experiments, and the high resolutions achieved by in-situ and remote sensing instruments, fundamental research on neutral and magnetized flows has become indispensable to advance knowledge in the geosciences. The main topics of this session are instabilities, energy cascades, mixing as well all the mechanisms underlying the dynamics of geophysical flows, such as waves, turbulence, boundary layer effects, phase transitions and the coupling with magnetic fields. Studies of rotating, stratified, helical, convecting and/or conductive fluids and plasmas are welcome.
