Postdoctoral Positions (m/f/d) in Fluid Physics of the Atmosphere

We have developed an airborne platform called the Max Planck CloudKite (MPCK). It has been deployed over the Atlantic Ocean during the EUREC4A research cruise and in northern Finland inside the Arctic Circle. Our instruments perform autonomous measurements in the atmosphere, including particle image velocimetry and holography. In the next phase of our investigations, we will simultaneously measure with high resolution aerosols, wind speed and atmospheric thermodynamics as a function of altitude. These measurements will be complemented by most advanced microphysical cloud measurements. In collaboration with our colleagues at the Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits IIS, we are developing SMART Integrated Electronic Sensors (SMARTIES) to quantify atmospheric transport and mixing through many neutrally buoyant and biocompatible floaters.

 >> The research
Atmospheric clouds and aerosols are the largest source of uncertainty in weather and climate prediction. The chemistry and physics of aerosols and clouds cover a wide range of scales, from the nanometres where aerosol activation occurs, to the hundreds of kilometres of weather systems. Turbulence and complex flows are important at all these scales. It is this multi-scale nature that continues to challenge our understanding. The full complexity can only be studied in the field, where the true parameter space can be explored. Here, high-resolution airborne measurements are key. We are looking for an enthusiastic and self-motivated early career researcher who is passionate about contributing to a better understanding of the complex physics of the atmosphere with a

PhD degree in physics, engineering, meteorology, or related fields.

knowledge in one or more of the following: experimental fluid physics and dynamics, turbulence, aerosol characterization, atmospheric flows, meteorology.
knowledge of programming languages such as Python, MATLAB, C or C++.
ability and desire to work in a diverse and international team.
good command of English. German language skills are not required.
knowledge of optics, big data analysis, instrument design, image analysis, remote sensing, machine learning or electronics is a big plus.

Salary and working hours follow the funding guidelines of the Max Planck Society for scientists: Working hours are fulltime; salary is E13 TVöD-Bund. The starting date is flexible.
